Easy Recipes For Hunters

Ground Rules:

Pretty much all of the recipes can be modified for store bought protein sources. You may have stumbled upon this blog and you don’t hunt, and that’s okay, feel free to make substitutions for store bought protein sources by using the following general guide:

Ground Beef: Any recipe with ground meat can be used with any red meat variety including: deer, elk, barbary sheep, etc. Wild game ground meat is going to be a leaner protein source.

Chicken: Most recipes with poultry are interchangeable with pheasant, grouse, prairie chickens, etc.

Pork: Any recipe that lists wild hogs or javi?

Game meats that don’t have close store substitutes, and have fairly unique flavor profiles:

  • Pronghorn Antelope
  • Duck
  • Sandhill Crane

Stuffed Pheasant Chicken Turkey

Pheasant hunts have such a special place in my heart. I’ve really only been on one big pheasant hunt, but it was a blast. I love how regal and different each bird is, and don’t even get me started on how much I freaking love their feathers. They were the

Green Chile Stew

Soups and stews just really make me happy. I have to make huge batches and freeze them, because my husband really hates soup when it’s over 40 degrees outside. Which is a whole lot of the time where we live. I really only have 2 months to make soup where

Pállela

Seafood Pallela (Pie-aye-yah), more complicated to say than it is to make. This dish is a family style dinner favorite, and one of the best ways to use shrimp. If you live on the coast, I’m jealous of your ability to get fresh seafood. One of the only things I

Would I even be from New Mexico if I didn’t publish a stuffed sopapilla recipe? These can be a lot of work, but oh are they worth it! These are cheater scratch made sopapillas, using a flour tortilla mix and doctoring it a bit. Credit to my mother in law

Cherry Pancakes

German cherry pancakes, another solid favorite from my dad’s kitchen arsenal. I’m honestly not even sure if these are actually of German origin, but that’s what we’ve always called them. This recipe is a solid camp recipe, it uses simple ingredients, and cooks great in a cast iron over the
